Best Start
The Best Start Project is a province wide in-home visiting program, targeting children from birth to twenty four months of age. Public Health Nurses from across Prince Edward Island conduct a screening and assessment for newborn infants and their familiesto identify those who can most benefit from ongoing in-home visiting support.
Best Start Workers provide a weekly in-home support program to participants through the existing network of Family Resource Centres located across Prince Edward Island. Best Start is a voluntary program that focuses on providing support in the following key areas: physical care and safety of the infant, nutrition, infant stimulation and mental health, child development information including parent / child activities, as well as a variety of other parenting information.
The Best Start Program Goal is :
To maximize the development of young children and their families, particularly those experiencing additional challenges such as isolation or the provision of support for parents who are young and single.
Program Objectives are:
To enhance the capacity of parents to parent effectively
To increase the likelihood of healthy child development
outcomes for the child
To impact on the child’s readiness to learn upon school entry
To promote positive parent-child interaction
To promote parents’ personal development
